I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream

There's never just one way to enjoy ice cream!

Weather it's a 20' ice cream sundae, an individual ice cream sundae, a family ice cream day, ice cream

in a bag or even a snow cone!
Whatever you choose, ice cream is a COOL, REFRESHING and DELICIOUS TREAT!

Here's the scoop on each of these delicious treats!

10'-20' OR LONGER ICE CREAM SUNDAE

Here's how:
Purchase a 10' section of plastic guttering (if you want a longer trough
purchase a connection piece between each pieces of gutter)
Purchase 2 end caps for the guttering
Aluminum Foil
Cardboard boats
Spoons (Color Changing Spoons are always fun)
Ice Cream - 1 normally purchase 5 gallons per 30-40 children.
Toppings of all kinds!

Need a larger sundae?
Simply purchase more 10' sections of guttering as well as the connection pieces to hook them together.

Wash the guttering and then line it with aluminum foil.

Optional: If you want to make your trough extra sturdy, use some screws and screw
it down to a 2X4 before covering it with foil.

Purchase paper food boats (hot dog boats) to stick down into the gutter.
When it is time to eat, each child will select their own spot/boat.

In the past, we have made the sundae directly in the gutter and each child grabbed a spoon and dug in.
However, for sanitary purposes, I have gravitated to the paper boats (hot dog boats).

Purchase ice cream and any toppings that you want to include in your sundae. The more toppings the better.
I normally purchase 5 gallons of ice cream for around 30-40 people. With all the toppings, that will be more than enough ice cream to go around.

After the children have eaten their fill, I simply remover the edges of the foil from the gutter and flip them over the top of the ice cream mess. I take the two sides of the foil and try to roll them together to enclose the mess the best I can and then I have one volunteer hold/tip a large lined trash can at one end of the trough (as close to the trough as they can). I have a couple more volunteers help me lift the first end out of the trough and guide it into the trash can. As we move along the trough, the trash can volunteer holds the trash can closely and moves as we move.  Once it starts, it goes very quickly so be prepared. After the trough is empty, the mess goes straight to the dumpster. Easy, Peasy!

Let's fill that trough!
Place 3-4 gallons of ice cream at different areas along the trough.
Place one volunteer with an ice cream scoop at each bucket.
Place food gloves (thin plastic gloves) on each child.
Have the children line up in a long line.
Send the first 3-4 kids to a bucket and allow THEM to scoop two scoops of ice cream and drop them into
any boat(s) near their bucket.
The volunteers will assist them with scooping if they need help.
They will also make sure the ice cream is distributed throughout the trough and not all in one boat.
Two scoops per boat is sufficient. With all the topping that are to come, it will be more than enough.
Once a child has scooped their two scoops (plenty of scooping for little hands) they
will run to the end of the line and rotate up to the buckets again.

Once all the ice cream is in the gutter, start with your toppings.
It is best to pour each of your toppings (except for syrups and whipped cream) into individual foam bowls.
Some bowls can hold the same thing.
Hand a bowl (with a spoon) to each child and tell them to move down the entire length of the sundae
spreading their topping out evenly.
I reserved the syrups and squirt whipped cream for my older children and gave them directions on how
much to use.

Once the sundae is complete, the eating begins.

I normally have a child claim their area, hand them a spoon and on the shout of "Go", they dig in!
Note: Color changing spoons are always fun!

Have your camera's ready!
The little tummies will get full long before the ice cream starts to run together
or before they start getting into each other's area.

It starts out with "Yum this is good" and ends with "Ohhhhh...I can't eat anymore."

Individual Ice Cream Sundae's

Of course, you can always set out bowls and allow the children to create their own sundae's...or line up the

bowls and do an assembly line using the same principles as above

Family Ice Cream Day
July is the perfect time to host a Family Ice Cream Day!
National Ice Cream Day is Celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in July!
Allow families to create their own sundae's, banana splits or bowls of ice cream or pass out ice cream cones,

ice cream bars, or popsicles or snowcones!

Snow Cones
Snow Cones are always a great alternative.
